5 Ways Towards Achieving Stress Relief At Work

Finding stress relief at work is something that eludes a great deal of our workplace population. And the combination of the worsening economy with the increased number of hours that workers are putting in is leading to people being more stressed out than ever.

Many people are stressed by the time the walk in to work in the morning. They may have gotten up early, fixed breakfast for the kids, gotten them off to school, and spent an hour in morning rush hour traffic.

Then they come into a place where they haven’t chosen the people that they work with. They haven’t chosen the projects or tasks that they are working on. Usually they haven’t chosen the number of hours in their work week or the times that they can start work and leave. It’s as though someone else is in charge of their life for 40 plus hours of the week. In a situation like this, it’s hard not to be stressed. In fact, much of the stress in the workplace is caused by a feeling of not being able to control your surroundings.

There are a number of ways of achieving stress relief at work. Here are five easy stress relief techniques at work that you may find useful.

1) One way that you can get stress relief at work is to listen to music. If you work in today’s typical office workplace, you’re in one cubicle of many, and possibly even sharing your cubicle with one or more co-workers. By simply programming your iPod with your favorite relaxing sounds and putting on your earphones, you can help to drown out the external and distracting workplace sounds and put yourself in a mellow mood.

2) Get your sleep. A frequent cause of stress is simply not getting enough sleep the night before. A lack of sleep can cause anxiety, nervousness, irritability, snappishness, and all sorts of stress symptoms in the workplace. If you are having trouble sleeping, seek the help of a qualified health professional to resolve the problem. If not getting enough sleep is due to other problems, try to arrange your schedule and activities to free up that needed time for sleep.

3) Change jobs. In many cases, it’s the job itself that is the primary cause of worker’s stress. If you’re in a job that you simply hate showing up for, you have to ask yourself if the money you’re making is enough of an incentive to make up for the stress that it’s giving you. Even in a tight job market, where you may not have much of a choice, you can still begin the process of positioning yourself out of your current position and into a new one.

4) Learn to breathe. Breath control is a time honored way of relaxing. The phrase “take a deep breath” used so often in pressure filled situations has a basis in research studies. Deep breaths help to relax the diaphragm which in turns helps to relax the rest of the body. This is only one of the many stress relief exercises at work that you can perform without discretely and without attracting undue attention.

5) Learn your job. A great deal of work related stress is generated simply by the person being insecure in how to do the duties that they’re responsible for. In most cases it’s a matter of the person never being correctly trained. But whether it’s your fault or not, if you’re having trouble in your job, seek the help of someone that knows how to do it. When a person is comfortable in the job that they do, their stress level diminishes significantly.
