It’s impossible to work at a stressful level for any significant period of time without getting worn down by it all. And yet, the constant, unrelenting pressures of daily life leaves many of us in need of some form of stress relief.
We all experience stress in our lives at some point or other. For most of us, stress is a transient condition. It comes and goes according to the things happening in our life at any particular moment. This is a normal part of the human condition. Others, however, are in a constant state of stress – chronic stress. This condition can cause or exacerbate existing physical and mental ailments as the chronic stress wreaks havoc on our immune system and peace of mind.

There are many stress relief methods and there’s no reason to get hung up on the idea that there is only one way to go about it. Every person is different, and what relaxes one person will cause someone else to tense up. The key thing is to experiment and fine the best stress relief method for you.
Sometimes stress relief is as simple as being able to recognize the difference between good stress and bad stress. The fact is that some tension in life is a positive thing. It can motivate us into taking necessary actions or into making necessary life changes. For example, the stress of working at a dangerous, low-income job might force us to go back to school for more education in an effort to move into a higher paying job in management. Or, the stress in your marriage, might move you to confront the situation, see a marriage counselor, and eventually improve the state of the marriage.
Stress is also useful to us when we’re in danger. This is where the “fight or flight” response comes into play. In this instance, stress hormones cause our reflexes to become faster and our strength and stamina to become greater, giving us a better chance of surviving the imminent threat. These are examples of good stress.
Bad stress is when your stress levels are preventing you from performing your job at an adequate level. Or when it’s interfering with your family and personal relationships. When events reach this point, it’s time to tackle the stress head on.
There are a number of stress relief techniques that you can try. For some, the standard relaxation techniques that include deep breathing, positive visualization and muscle relaxation exercises may be the ticket. For others, laughter is indeed the best medicine. Some can work through stress simply be talking it out, and others find stress relief in rationalizing the situation. This may include identifying the reasons that you are feeling stress, determining what if anything can be done about it, and acting when necessary and appropriate. Finding out the best stress relief technique for you is a trail and error process. But the process can’t begin until you take the initiative in confronting it.
